The NQT Project is an initiative at the UCT School of Education to support newly qualified teachers (NQTs) as they enter the teaching profession. The project came about from heartfelt reactions and discussions from PGCE graduates from the class of 2014 who provided feedback about their challenges and difficulties in their first year of teaching.
The NQT Project started in February of 2016. The first cohort was a small group of graduates entering the profession. In the seven years it’s been running, the NQT Project has grown considerably in size and scope. To add to the UCT branch, CPUT has started its own NQT branch, strongly aligned with UCT. Not only have the number of teachers who register increased year by year, but we are now supporting teachers who are working in all SA provinces. There is also a mentoring course for ‘alumni’ of the NQT project who wish to give back.
The NQT Project comprises of a SACE accredited short course as well as a greater support network for teachers from which teachers can benefit.
The NQT Project receives funding from the HCI and Saville Foundations.
The NQT Course is a one-year SACE accredited course that is designed to offer practical support and mentorship to newly qualified teachers and early career teachers
Teacher Resources are free to use and may be useful for various pedagogical and professional aspects of the job.
the NQT Project is documenting and researching the experience of NQTs.

The NQT short course is the vehicle through which the NQT Project offers workshop support to newly qualified teachers. The workshops are run at UCT School of Education in a cosy and friendly environment where teachers can be authentic about their challenges and feel safe from reprisal. Cookies, cushions and tea are common.
Assessment and certification
NQTs are requested to submit 4 short reflections (one page each) throughout the year on their practice in their schools, themed around the workshop topics. These are compiled into a portfolio of evidence which can then be submitted to obtain the SACE Continued Professional Development Points.
Successful completion of the course (minimum of 6 workshops attended) also receives certification from UCT for Continuing Education.
Cost
We ask a nominal fee of R500 for the course to assist us in covering costs. However, in the event that an NQT would like to participate but is unable to pay this fee, we will consider a waiver.
